The saying goes that from Cape Town to Hout Bay is further than Hout Bay to Cape Town. Many Capetonians think of Hout Bay as being out in the sticks (i.e far away)
I suppose this comes from the fact that until relatively recently Hout Bay was a small and rural coastal village. Up until about 20 years ago the population was less than a few thousand.
Actually Hout Bay is a only 20 minute drive to the City Centre (along one of the worlds most scenic routes) A look at a map of the Cape Peninsula shows that Hout Bay is the most central point along the Atlantic coastline.
In fact Hout Bay is only 30 minutes way from the International airport (OK 45min in traffic!) and 40 minutes away from 5 out of the 6 most visited tourist attractions.
